Large Vans or Large Wheel Base Hire Vans

Long Wheel Base Vans are the traditional large vans, and ideal for large, long or heavy loads. Generally they have a payload of around 1500kg/1.5 tonnes combined with a load space of between 9 to 12 cubic meters depending upon the model. This translates into a high roof and width of about 1.7 meters, along with a cargo area length of 3.4 meters. As a result these types of van are ideally suited to moving bulky furniture, heavy items such as machinery or complete kitchen units. Almost all van rental companies and depots will have this type of van available to hire.

Whilst LWB vans are very useful for moving large, bulky or heavy iterms, there is a downside. This comes in the form of lower fuel efficency (they need larger engines after all, for the increased load), typically around 25-35 mpg, higher insurance costs, higher price and therefore more expensive to rent. Also they are not as manouverable or easy to handle as smaller vans, although they do normally come with large mirrors, power steering and car like gears to offset these problems. However it is important to understand you are not driving a car, allow extra stopping distance when fully laden, take corners more slowly, and make sure your cargo is securely fastened (there's a lot of room for it to roll around in, and so damage itself or the van) and you and your load should arrive safely and intact

The more popular makes of this van are:
  • Vauxhall Vivaro
  • Ford Transit LWB
  • Renault Master
  • Mercedes Sprinter LWB

Remember: You are driving a large heavy vehicle, allow extra stopping distance, and corner slowly, also rear visibility is reduced and there is a significant blind spot directly behind the rear doors.

To summarize if you've got a large, heavy or awkward load (but not a roll of carpet - see XLWB or Luton vans for that) then a LWB van is probably the best type of hire van for you, as long as you feel comfortable enough in your driving skills to manage one.
