Student Van Hire

Although hiring a van can provide students with a cheap and easy way of moving house, it certainly beats a dangerously overloaded car! And be useful for other occasions such as concerts, sports, or moving equipment. Unfortunaetly though it can often cost more than it should. This is mainly due to the additional charges that rental companies apply to young drivers. In addition some rental companies won't rent to anyone under 25. As the rental companies change their position on a regular basis over age restrictions (often as a result of the insurers they use), the only way to be sure that you will be able to rent a van from the company you want is to call them (they are often slow to update the T&C on their website), and check exactly what additional charges there are and what category of vans they allow younger drivers to drive.

So what can you do to avoid these charges and rent from the cheapest van rental company?
1. Find the oldest person you can to drive your van, this will help to drive down or avoid the additional charges. 2. Another useful trick to avoid some of the additional hire charges that rental companies levy on young drivers is to consider asking somebody over 30 to hire the van as the main driver and name the other drivers as secondary drivers, generally as long as the main driver drives the van at some point this is allowed (check with the company you are renting from) and will result in a lower rental charge. 3. Also don't forget it's worth looking in your local newspaper for "van and man" adverts, these might work out cheaper overall.

What do you need to rent a van?
1. A full UK/EU driving licence will let you drive everything up to a Luton Van under 3.5 tonnes. 2. A credit or debit card to pay for the rental and deposit - normally in the driver's name.
