Not unsuprisingly it has been announced that if intelligent speed adaptation (ISA) go aheads, cars and vans in fleets (which includes hire vans) used for company work will be the first to benefit from such technology.
"Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) is a general term for Intelligent Transport Systems that serve to limit the speed of a vehicle. By restricting the vehicle to the posted speed limit, ISA potentially provides one of the most effective strategies for reducing inappropriate speeds"
This seems appropriate, as business motoring needs to be seen to be leading in terms or road safety and already company car and van fleets are amongst the safest vehicles on the road as a direct result of legislation targeting them.
ABS and ESC are common in modern vehicles and this technology could help significantly in reducing excessive speed in hire vehicles, and business vehicles. No doubt if this technology is rolled out soon, there would be additional unforseen benefits (as well as the obvious - increased safety, fewer fines, lower fuel consumption) as well. Such as lower insurance premiums on vans equipped with it.
If it is ever rolled out to the private sector for cars, vans, trucks, etc. it may cause a rush on older model vehicles which don't have or can't be fitted with such technology. How it is handled is in the goverment's hands so we will just have to wait and see.
